My Campaign Ends

Well, the response has finally been sent out to everyone who signed my on-line petition. I assumed Downing Street would merely pass it over to the Welsh Assembly. Instead, it gave the official response already given out by the WAG.
We have read Pembrokeshire County Council's stance when they meet officers at the Welsh Assembly which could give the impression that their terms would make it difficult to bring the 2 sides together to be able to agree to tolls being ultimately abolished.
If the meeting has not taken place, I would urge both sides to work to find the "real deal" for the people of Pembrokeshire as the current situation really needs to end.
I hope common sense will prevail .....on both sides, so we can have a "win win" situation.
Somehow, I have my doubts. I hope I am wrong. Signing off ......... for now, anyway!

Officers run the Welsh Assembly Government - Official (to me, anyway!)

Throughout, I have tried to maintain an open and impartial view on the Cleddau Bridge.

I have finally received a response from Michael Hillier (Roads Network Management Admin Team) at the Welsh Assembly Government in response to my letter of 29.7.07 to the Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones.

Michael's letter dated 31.8.07 just reiterates his response to me of 1.8.07, in reply to my letter to the First Minister. But he does add that WAG officials should hopefully be meeting "PCC sometime in September, but the exact date is to be finalised."

I had hoped that with Plaid in Government that maybe things might change in Cardiff and that I could have at least had a response from the DFM. After all, Wales has a population of just over 2 million. In England, I would guess there are Councils that must be similar in size.

I feel most disappointed at the fact that the only responses have been from officers. Things obviously are not changing with Plaid in Government and it just confirms in my opinion that officers pull the strings .... I am obviously somewhat nieve, but I had expected better, on such a major issue.

Finally, I saw on the BBC News today that the new SNP "Government" in Scotland will be introducing legislation to abolish bridge tolls.

Maybe we should get rid of Plaid and vote SNP.

This makes me think (which is dangerous, I can assure you!), maybe I should stand for Pembrokeshire County Council in 2008, for the SNP......... Tempt me ......

Being in Government means taking decisions. With Plaid now part of the WA Government, it could mean no change as far as Pembrokeshire is concerned, even though their Leader has 2 "FREE" bridges that link his constituency of Anglesey (Ynys Mon) to the mainland.
As BLOGSPOT has introduced this polling facility, I have added the poll, which you can enter (free of charge!).
Should there be no tolling at all in Wales, or should Pembrokeshire be the exception? The choice is yours ......

Campaign steps up to 2nd Gear

I would like to put on record my thanks for the time and courtesy extended to me by Paul Davies AM, and his PA (David Howlett) for seeing me this morning to discuss progress and how to take the campaign further.

Basically, I am reaching the point where I cannot take the matter any further myself (unless I dress up as Rebecca and go and burn the toll booths downs, LOL!) as its now over to the likes of Paul Davies, Angela Burns and Alun Davies as our local AM's, along with Pembrokeshire County Council, and then the WAG itself.

I stressed the need to get a Pembrokeshire Grouping together to take it forward as a joint Pembrokeshire campaign as basically, everyone is singing from the same hymn sheet.

I will report back as to what Ieuan Wyn Jones has to say and then I will give it a couple of months to see what is happening, before seeing how things are progressing.

PETITION DEADLINE ENDS, ACTION WILL CONTINUE

When the petition deadline came at midnight on 11th August, the total showed 1549. As I assumed the petition would be removed, I took a copy and issued a press release.

A few days later, the number showed 1552.

As I am due to meet Paul Davies, AM, today, I thought I had better copy the updated figure. It then showed 1554.

I have no idea what is going on, even though it clearly states the petitions is now closed as its deadline has passed, somehow signatures are being added. I just assumed it would not allow any further names to be added.

My aim is to try and take the issue further by trying to get an all "party" group together that will keep the matter under constant review and not allow it to die a natural death, so that the status quo can continue.

I have been meaning to get the relevant sections of replies received from Rhodri Morgan and Cllr John Davies, onto this blog. I cannot say the delay is due to the fine weather, as its been appalling!

1. Reply from Michael Hillier (Road Networks Management Admin Team) replied on 1.8.07, on behalf of Rhodri Morgan:-

"The current position is that officials from the Welsh Assembly Government Transport Wales are yet to meet with Pembrokeshire County Council regarding the trunking of the A477 between Pembroke Dock and Johnston, which includes Cleddau Bridge. As such, no policy has yet been developed regarding the adoption of the bridge, timesclaes or the issue of tolling. The trunking of the network is currentl low priority due to potential financial requirements and statutory issues".

2. Reply from Cllr John Davies. E-mail dated 30.7.07

"... not at any time in the past has the WAG or the former Welsh Office suggested that they would abolish the tolls. In the absence of any firm commitment in writing from Ministers or Senior WAG Civil Servants, it is only right and proper that we assume that the present principle of charging would continue. Even recently in questions Rhodri Morgan's final words were explicitly clear, 'I makeno promises'.

Secondly I can give you a categorical assurance that as a County Council, we are positive in entering into dialogue with WAG with a view of negotiating a 'take over' of the bridge and its future maintenance plus its associated route. This would be done on the strict proviso that the Pembrokeshire Tax Payer benefits from such a change. I am sure you would agree to do anything else would be nothing less than reckless from our part.

I hardly need to remind you that on previous occasions over a period that spans beyond this Council, firm commitments and assurances have been less than forthcoming from WAG and its predecessor the Welsh Office, nevertheless we will be making another attempt to achieve wha is for the long term good of the whole of Pembrokeshire and its people."

WHILST WRITING, I am still awaiting a response from Ieuan Wyn Jones, the new Deputy First Minister who also holds the Cabinet position of the Economy and Transport. I guess a response is likely in the very near future, in accordance to WAG timescales given to respond to correspondence.

The On-line Petition may be nearing its end .... BUT THE FIGHT HAS JUST BEGUN

If anyone thinks that just because the on-line petition is coming to an end, that I will disappear off into the sunset and never be heard of again, they are wrong.

I am not going to be satisfied until a means is found whereby tolls are finally lifted from the Cleddau Bridge. The options available could be any of the following:-

Pembrokeshire CC abolishes tolls and its maintenance is paid out of the Council Tax. If Cllr Jamie Adams figures are correct, that would cost £50 for the Band D Council Tax payer. I guess this route is highly unlikely.
Pembrokeshire County Council receives a grant every year from the WAG to cover the cost of tolls, pay off the loans etc... (This assumes they exist). The Council retains ownership of the Bridge. Possibly a cheaper option for the WAG to consider?
The WAG takes over control of the Cleddau Bridge and trunks the road either side of it. Tolls are abolished and all future maintenance comes from general taxation. Something Pembrokeshire residents and businesses already pay for all other trunked bridges, within Wales.
The Economy & Transport Minister (currently Ieuan Wyn Jones) and thus the WAG propose to introduce tolling on all trunked bridges within Wales to ensure Pembrokeshire is treated "equally and fairly" with the rest of Wales. Now who would want to commit political suicide by introducing this proposal? Or finally,
No one does anything. The status quo is maintained and everyone feels narked, in Pembrokeshire.

There is an option 6, but I have never advocated the burning down of the tolls booths as Rebecca returns.

Something has to be done, and that is what has been going through my mind in recent weeks, to keep the momentum going.

The End is in Sight for the On-Line Petition

Well, the petition ends next Saturday, 11th August. As at this moment, there are 1486 signatures. WOW!

I have sent a letter for the Editors of the Western Telegraph and the Milford Mercury to thank everyone for taking the trouble to sign it and to remind readers that they don't have much time left if they wish to sign it. This of course depends on the letter being published this week.

Its been a busy week.

I have received e-mails from John Davies, the Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council. Its his first response to me, directly.

Whilst it dispenses with the polite formalities that I was taught at school with regard to writing letters (especially to people you have never met or had contact with, before), it did clearly set out his view that he was happy to discuss terms with the WAG over the future of the Cleddau Bridge and I am more than happy to accept his assurances. I will dig the e-mail out and publish on here, the actual wording,

I have also had a reply from Rhodri Morgan's office. With regard to the trunking of the road from Pembroke Dock to Johnston, the civil servant made it clear that this was a low priority. Once again, I will get the letter and publish the relevant sections.

Steven e-mailed me following my chaser e-mail to say that he thought he had responded to my initial e-mail, giving his support to the petition and said that he thought he had replied previously. I am sure that he had not, but I am prepared to move on and apologise, if he had, and I possibly made a mistake.

I hope I can meet up with Steven, in the near future.

This ties up with the comments made in the Milford Mercury, a few weeks ago.

I have finally found an hour or two to sit down and write the promised e-mail to Cllr John Davies, questioning the County Council's apparent shifting in attitude towards the future of the Cleddau Bridge.

I hope they are not backpedalling on the hope that seemed to emanate from County Hall, when they were first approached and asked to comment on my petition, some 2 months ago. If they are beginning to backpedal, maybe it should become an Olympic sport at London 2012?

Whilst writing, I also took the opportunity to write, to Ieuan Wyn Jones, the Plaid Cymru Leader, who has now replaced Brian Gibbons as the new Economy and Transport Minister in Rhodri Morgan's new Cabinet.
The e-mail has been sent twice to the official e-mail address stated on the WAG web-site. I must try again tomorrow or find an alternative address.

As Ieuan Wyn Jones has 2 important bridges in his own constituency linking Anglesey to the Welsh mainland, I hope he will be sympathetic with us down in Pembrokeshire. The Menai and Britannia Bridges, if you didnt know. Both are free to use - at the moment!

Welcome to the Federation of Small Businesses

A BIG welcome to the Federation of Small Businesses who have been in contact with me (Mike Jones). I received an e-mail today from Mike, saying he has put a link to the petition, on the web-site.

I have STILL to write to Cllr John Davies, as I mentioned a couple of days ago. I hope he hasnt been waiting for the e-mail as I heard he was at the Royal Welsh Show yesterday. I hope he is still there, giving me time to write to him.

Whilst writing, I see the Plaid Leader is also the new Minister for the Economy and Transport, replacing Brian Gibbons.

As I have a copy of a letter from Brian Gibbons to Nick Ainger in which he is positive about the WAG taking over the Bridge, I think I ought to write to the new Minister to get his support. I am sure he will share the concerns of Pembrokeshire residents - especially as he has the Menai Bridge and Britannia Bridge linking his constituecy with the Welsh mainland. The alternative of course is to ask if he supports his bridges BEING TOLLED, so they face the same stealth tax as we do. I wonder ....... Will let you know when I have written to Ieuan Wyn Jones.

Western Telegraph BLOG - * NEW *

One thing this petition has taught me, is how to set up a blog. I have enjoyed it so much that I have taken up the opportunity to write a blog on the "Western Telegraph" reader's blogs pages, on their web-site.

I will be using it to highlight things I see on my travels around Pembrokeshire. It will NOT be a vehicle to publicise this campaign as this is a separate matter. Obviously, if there is a final success story to report, I might report it ....

For such a beautiful county as Pembrokeshire, I see and hear things that need a platform. As we are a democracy, we are fortunate to be able to bring our views to a wider audience, even if we don't always agree with them.

I will be the 4th reader to have their blog on the web-site. I submitted my first piece, this morning, just to introduce myself, so I hope it will soon be available on the Western Telegraph's web-site. I will be joining fellow blogger, Paul Davies AM, among others ....

I have just sent an e-mail to my MP and AM as I have still not received any acknowledgement or reply to my e-mail of 31st May, whereby I asked for their support.

I trust its an administrative oversight by both elected representatives.

I am also writing to the Leader of the County Council to clarify some issues in the report in this week's Western Telegraph (page 9, 18.7.07). I would hate to think the Council may be backpeddling on its initial response in the media, a month or two back. I would also hate to think Cllr Adams has been misquoted by the media (the last occasion being on Dragon's Eye, allegedly). I would also hate to think that a campaign is being orchestrated to create fear in the eye's of the public.

My petition clearly states that tolls should be lifted (by PCC or WAG) and any maintenance comes out of general taxation.

According to the Western Telegraph, PCC are alleging that tolls would still be in place if the WAG took the Bridge over. They also go on about removing the toll over the Cleddau Bridge will lead to calls to remove tolls on the Severn Bridges?

Huh? The Severn Bridges border England AND Wales, whereas the Cleddau Bridge is well within Wales by some 115 miles (approx).

Are these scare tactics? I trust and hope not! If so, they are fairly pathetic.

I would respond by saying that if the WAG propose to keep tolls on the Cleddau Bridge, they ought to treat the rest of Wales equally and introduce tolls on bridges throughout Wales. we can't have one rule for Pembrokeshire and another for the rest of Wales!

If this petition is to be discredited, please try and do a better job!

Democratic Defecit

I was about to trundle off to bed and thought I would look at the latest epistle from Old Grumpy to the Pembrokeans.
Old Grumpy made reference to the apparent appalling conduct of last week's Full Council Meeting of Pembrokeshire County Council, by the new Council Chairman.
Unfortunately, I could not be present (in the public gallery) as I had to take my wife to Carmarthen, but OG' s article headed "DEMOCRATIC DEFICIT" is worthy of reading as to how our Chairman of Council, conducted himself over the important issue of the Cleddau Bridge and how he dealt with the questions that had been submitted.
I must invite readers to click on http://www.oldgrumpy.co.uk and click on this week's article (if you are reading this up to 24.7.07). After that date, click on 17.7.07.
As Old Grumpy is there in the Council Chamber, I leave readers to decide for themselves whether Pembrokeshire County Council conducts itself as a model local authority, deserving of our respect, or not.

Moving Forward in the right direction

Councillor John Martin Allen

Today, my wife Ann and I attended the funeral at Parc Gwyn Crematorium of Cllr John Martin Allen, the former Liberal Democrat Leader at Pembrokeshire County Council.
Yes, this has no actual bearing on the petition, as it is non-political and I have done my utmost to keep it that way.
I have not even seen John for probably 3 years, but my political involvement in the PAST was with the Liberal Democrats BEFORE we moved to Pembrokeshire. Since moving to Pembrokeshire, I have kept out of active politics. That was my past.
So why am I bringing this up on my blog. Well, the funeral was a humanist service and the first I have ever attended. It was so nice to hear about the person and all his activities and what everyone thought of him.
However, it was his political activities that made me realise how John Allen worked as a Councillor, the same way as I did. I will always be courteous, but also prepared to forcefully make the point and hear other people's points of view. Like John, I have no intention of giving up on this matter. I will keep coming back and NOT give up.
John Allen had his principles and this is what keeps me going - ensuring fairness and standing up for what is right.
THE CLEDDAU BRIDGE TOLLS ARE NOT FAIR AND THEY CERTAINLY ARE NOT RIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE OF PEMBROKESHIRE.
John Allen may have died, but I will act with the determination of John Smeaton, the hero at Glasgow airport. John Smeaton stood up to the terrorists, I will stand up to those who wish to maintain the status quo with regards the unfair stealth tax (aka Bridge Tolls!).

My thanks go to Nick Ainger MP, for the time and courtesy in seeing me at his surgery in Tenby, yesterday afternoon.
It was not the time and place for me or lecture him as he is far more aware of the facts and issues, as he after all, raised the matter in the House of Commons in 1994 and presented a 10000 signature petition. That was in the days when signatures were written on paper. I remember paper, well!
Nick's position is well documented and he would welcome the abolition of tolls - whether it came from the bridge being transferred to the Welsh Assembly or from Pembrokeshire County Council.
Nick said that the Welsh Assembly were generally favourable towards my position and he would get a copy of a letter from Dr Brian Gibbons, the Transport Assembly Minister, to me.
It would therefore seem that the ball is now firmly in the court of Pembrokeshire County Council. I will be writing to the County Council Leader, before their meeting this coming Thursday. By e-mail of course. Paper is so old hat!

Epistle to Rhodri Morgan

I must presume Rhodri Morgan mus thave had other things on his mind. Minor matters such as the Labour Conference this evening convened to agree (after 2 months!) to go into coalition with Plaid, I guess, as I have had no reply to the e-mail I sent to him this lunchtime.

No, it wasn't a detailed case - just a general outline to say why this wrong, perpetrated against the people (mainly) of Pembrokeshire had to be put right and for common sense to prevail.

I dont know if the Cleddau Bridge's future formed a part of the "One Wales" document that Labour and Plaid are proposing to sign up to, but I hope that is not used as an argument, to retain the status quo!

Tomorrow is another day and of course, I am due to meet Nick Ainger MP in Tenby. Once again, it wont be a detailed discussion on the facts as Nick undoubtedly knows FAR MORE than I do. I am merely the idiot thats put his head above the parapet, waiting for the guns to turn on me. But its all quiet on the Western Front and with over 1400 signatures and still growing, it shows that this wrong has to be put right.

I hope that with all the pressure on in all quarters, that there is th political will to do something as I prefer action to talking.

Watch this space as I report on my meeting with Nick Ainger and Andrew goes to sunny Tenby. Hope I can find somewhere to park!

Nick Ainger MP

I had an e-mail from Nick Ainger MP's, office, yesterday. My first contact from ANY AM or MP.
Phoned his office this morning and I have an appointment to discuss the matter of the Cleddau Bridge with him, tomorrow, at his surgery in Tenby.
Thankfully, I am already over that side of the bridge, working, so I can pop over to see him and discuss matters!

Yesterday's Milford Mercury published 3 letters on the debate, including mine. Anyone not in receipt of a copy can Google "Milford Mercury" and hopefully find their way to their web-site and the letters page.

According to today's Western Telegraph, Rhodri Morgan, our Welsh Assembly Government's First Minister is now promising to look into the matter of the bridge's future.

I will be writing to Rhodri Morgan, The Regional AM named (Labour), with copies to Ken Rowlands and John Davies, on Pembrokeshire County Council, and a few copies to the local press.

At times like this, I am glad I am doing all this, on my own. If I was working with a Committee, we would be having meeting to decide important issues such as stationery supplier, blog layout and at who's house you next meet at.

Who said Committee's are the best way to make decisions? But then again, it makes me sound like Stalin or Hitler .... accept I havent committed mass murder yet !

I hope to get the letter available on the net, for all to see. No secrecy involved, on my side ...

A BIG Welcome to Pembroke Dock Community Web Project

Wey Hey! I must extend a welcome to Andrew at the PDCWP who have found this blog and have added it as a link to their front page.

So it is now possible for Johnston to Pembroke Dock to be reached without having to pay 75p each way. Its called the Internet!

I hope readers of the PDCWP find this blog interesting. If you don't, and you have sleeping problems, I hope it cures your insomnia. This blog is therefore multi-functional.

I came on here tonight, to report that I have been to see Simon Carr at the Mercury and my County Councillor, Ken Rowlands. Ken, as you may know, has submitted a Notice of Motion to Pembrokeshire County Council's Full Council Meeting to be held on 12th July.

Simon advised me that he will be publishing letters on Thursday, from myself and Kate Becton. Separate letters, I may add! I hope Simon will catch up with Ken, to be able to report on Ken's motion.

I trust readers of this blog have a sense of humour, as wacky as mine, as I replied to a letter the Mercury published from a G O'Sullivan (sex not known - to me, anyway!) in support of bridge tolls and said (s)he would pay double. G O'Sullivan also praised the engineering feat of the bridge.

1. Are we talking of the same Cleddau Bridge. At most, I would describe it as a functional bridge. It will never be listed! (Surely?)
2. G O'Sullivan also came from, wait for it, BRIDGEND!

I talked to Simon as to whether the WAG would actually consider taking it over. Does Rhodri Morgan care that this is the ONLY remaining toll bridge within Wales?

MY proposed Notice of Motion

I promised to add my proposed notice of motion, to this blog. I had been in discussion with my County Councillor, Ken Rowlands and thought he would show me his Notice of Motion (NoM) to see if I was happy with it, before submitting it. I since learned that it had alreay been submitted to Pembrokeshire County Council, so I sent his a letter, dated 27.6.07, giving numerous facts and my proposed "draft" NoM.

This letter was ALSO e-mailed to the Leader of Pembrokeshire County Council and an acknowledgement has been received from Denise Dawes (PA to the Chief Executive and Cabinet Support Officer). A hard copy was also sent to the Leader, by snail mail,

My NoM draft is as follows:

"That Pembrokeshire County Council approaches the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to discuss the future of the Cleddau Bridge, with a view to negotiating terms acceptable to both parties, to transfer ownership to the Welsh Assembly. The ultimate aim being to abolish tolls paid by motorists, thus further benefitting economic development within Pembrokeshire.

In order to achieve this, Council instructs the Chief Executive (or another named Officer?) to bring a full report to the next meeting of Full Council to include:-

1. The financial implications to thisCouncil, in regard to the effect on the Revenue Account; outstanding debt; and any compensation that would be sought from the WAG for transferring the ownership of this asset, to their control.
2. Assurances required from the WAG regarding the future maintenance and upkeep of the Cleddau Bridge, once ownership is transferred.
3. An assurance that tolls will be abolished once the bridge becomes the responsibilty of the Welsh Assembly, thus ensuring the freedom of movement within Pembrokeshire. Once the Cleddau Bridge is transferred to the WAG, all future works would be paid out of generaltaxation.
4. Other highway, staffing andlegal issues - including, the possible trunking of the roads either side of the Cleddau Bridge.
5. Approaches to be made to the County's AM's and MP's, to get their full support and co-operation, to work with the Council to make necessary representations at the Assembly, the Welsh Office and Parliament.
6. Details on discussions on the above matter, with the Welsh Assembly.

I hope this is informative. I have put this into the open arena as there's no reason to keep this secret from anyone. I believe in total openness as thats how I have operated in the past, when I was a Town and District Councillor.

General Update

At 1415 signatures, it now ranks at 158th out of 7816 petitions on the PM's web-site.
As the rules state that a petition with over 200 signatures will receive an official response from Whitehall, I am most pleased that this petition will at least receive some attention by the group that runs the on-line petitions web-site.
Still, progress locally seems to be continuing and Thursday 12th July seems to be the next date on the calendar, when Cllr Ken Rowland's petition comes to the Full Council at Pembrokeshire County Council.
As the ongoing saga at the Welsh Assembly continues as to who will form the Government for the next 4 years, I hope as much time and effort will be given to looking at how the Assembly can take over the responsibility of the Cleddau Bridge and abolishing the tolls.
If Labour and Plaid (or Plaid, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats) can spend hour after hour after hour and day after day after day on this matter .... then sorting out the bridge's future should be rather piffling in comparison. Or am I being simplistic (or hopeful).
I hope that the Full Council agrees to take the matter to the Welsh Assembly and ensure top level negotiations commence.
The matter cannot be discarded like a fag end!

Without any prior knowledge, I read the Milford Mercury (28.6.07) to find that they have done a whole page (7) on the Cleddau Bridge and its future.
The Editor, Simon Carr had promised me several weeks ago that they will speak to our 2 AM's and 2 MP's to get their views.
I must therefore use this opportunity to make public the fact that my phone call to Nick Ainger's constituency office and a follow up fax (sent through www.faxyourmp.com) has resulted in complete silence.
In fairness, e-mails sent to Stephen Crabb and Paul Davies, have also not had even the courtesy of an acknowledgement or even a reply. These were sent several weeks ago.
I am not passing any comment. I leave it to you, the reader to make your own mind up.
HOWEVER, I must say that I am more than pleased with the views Nick, Stephen and Paul have been quoted as saying in the Mercury. I did ask Paul Davies to forward my e-mail to Angela Burns, as I did not have an e-mail address for her and I wanted to ensure she was kept informed of my petition. I have had no reply for her, either.
Whilst Angela may be currently viewed as sitting on the proverbial fence, I certainly hope its not the fence to be found on the bridge itself. If she falls one way, its a 3 foot drop onto the bridge footpath. The other side is a 100 foot drop into the Cleddau and a bye-election in the South Pembrokeshire Assembly seat. I sincerely hope that Angela will realise the strength of feeling and the actual argument about tolling needs to be brought into the 21st Century, with regard to the Cleddau Bridge.

Well. I guess you are wondering why there hasn't been any postings for the last 10 days? No, I havent been bumped off by a "Keep the Tolls in Place" action group!
I was up at 4am today as my head was spinning with ideas over a proposed motion that Cllr Ken Rowlands was submitting to the County Council.
Ken kindly gave me a copy last Friday (or Thursday?) and I like to take a few days to get my head around things before commiting my comments on paper.
I normally do that when cutting the lawn, but as the weather has been atrocious, that has not been done.
As its getting late and I am tirted, I will produce the draft I drew up and dropped into Ken's this morning, as I now find out that his motion has been submitted to Council.
A copy of the letter with my proposed draft has also been e-mailed and snail mailed to the Council Leader. An e-mailed copy was also sent to another Pembs County Councillor, who shall remain nameless. But buy me a bottle of Ruddles Rhubarb beer (£1.69 at Tesco, Haverfordwest), I might let on. ....
As I said above, I will post a copy of my draft "proposed" motion, on this blog, in the next few days, once all the interest in Gordon Brown taking over as PM has died down, and his new Cabinet has been announced. The press will undoubtedly be scratching around for a news story to fill their pages..... LOL !!

This is dedicated to Davey of Fishguard who is the only person who has admitted to reading this blog. Obviously, there are hundreds of others (probably in County Hall!) wo are reading this to see what my tactics are.

Well, here's a secret, so please dont tell anyone. As no one reads this, the secret is safe with me. Well, I will be e-mailing Cllr Jamie Adams a list of simple questions as to what happens to the toll money. They will be so simple, as I will be giving the answers myself. The answers are a choice between YES and NO. What could be simpler. Please e-mail me if you would like a copy of the e-mail.

I have to ask these questions, as I have become embroiled in the debate as to what happens to the money. That was not the purpose of the petition. Its arisen as a result of my petition. As Pembs CC have nothing to hide, I am sure I will get the answers quite quickly. If not, there is the FOI or DA. I have been asked about the money in the street, so I am having to ask those who take the money from me and you. WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THE MONEY ONCE ITS BANKED?

Statistics - 1130 signatures. Up 25. 167th in size out of 7624. Number 166 is a petition expecting the authorities to give all the support and assistance to help find Madeline McCann.

Well, its been a busy, busy day. I will have to catch up with today, tomorrow - if you get my drift! I have to go to bed as I have an early start tomorrow.
No, the Pope has not granted me an audience!
1305 signatures, up 35 or 36? Now 173 out of 7587 petitions and seen on BBC1's Wales Today and then on Dragon's Eye. I apologise to Abigail Neal from the BBC when off camera, I accidentally called it Dragon's Den!

I wonder if anyone reads this blog. In any case, I'm not bovvered as it performs the role of a diary (and alibi!) of what I have been up to - within reason.

The DRAGONS EYE team from BBC Wales TV met up with me by the Cleddau Bridge at noon today and we took various shot down by the Jolly Sailor in Burton. Whilst filming, the landlord came out and asked what was going on as no one had bothered to ask if they could film from there!

I was interviewed with the bridge as a backdrop, before we moved off to film a shot driving over the bridge and back again. The £1.50 being paid by the BBC (ie, the licence payer), with the interview continuing whilst driving. I trust the odd swear word and where we had to do re-takes are not shown! I felt it went well, though I wonder when the BBC had spoken to someone before me and would be conducting an interview with Nick Ainger MP, by phone (I understand). They would finish by speaking to Cllr Jamie Adams, from Pembrokeshire County Council.

Off course, I had the mobile switched off whilst filming and when I got home, I had a message from the local BBC reporter for West Wales, Abigail Neal, wishing to conduct an interview.

It seemed strange to ring her back and tell her .... I had been out with the Dragon's Eye team! still, I've booked to meet Abigail at 10am tomorrow, at the Bridge, once again.

Dragon's Eye - Thursday 14th June. 9pm on BBC2W and repeated on BBC1 Wales at 10.35pm.

Figures - now 179th out of 7542 petitions, with 1269 signatures. Another 27 signatures in the last 24 hours, so it continues to trundle.

Its been high drama in the house as I had to take Randolf to the vet to have a lump removed from his back. When we collected him this afternoon, he was pleased to see us and jumping around as though he hadnt been sedated. Hopefully, he just had a wart.

STATS - up to 186 out of 7529 petitions, currently open! Another 21 signatures and 3 more other petitions as this goes up the "charts". Now stands at 1242 signatures.

In the immortal words of 'Waynes World', ie, "we're not worthy", I notice that my petition has now reached the hallowed Pembrokeshire jottings, otherwise known as OLD GRUMPY. I refer you to www.oldgrumpy.co.uk.

Another 31 signatures!

Well, its a bad day for England and St George. England may have won the Test Series against the West Indies, but another 31 signatures today means that with 1221 signatures, its now 190th out of 7499 petitions, and it has leapt past a petition for St George's Day to be made a national holiday.

So a little county the size of Pembrokeshire (population about 115,000) manages to overtake a petition affecting England (population about 52 million!).

On the one hand I am happy at the effect that this petition is having as signatures continue to be added, but being English myself, I can't help being a little sorry for St George.

St George killed the Dragon, whereas a Dragon is also to be found on the Welsh flag and the emblem of the Welsh Assembly!

I had an interesting phone call from the BBC today. Will update more, in due course, when I actually have news to report, along with the response from MP's and AM's, which I promised for tonight, but I am afraid bed is calling..... and my wife, telling me to get off this computer!

Whilst mowing the lawn, been working in my mind, the need to get the need stage in place - the paper petition. Watch this space!!

1190 signatures. Up 16. Well, its been such a hot, muggy day, so I am grateful that anyone should take the time to log on their computer and sign the petition. Now 194th in order of size, out of 7459 petitions.

Just 3 signatures short of a petition requesting the Govt NOT to create a unitary authority for the whole of Somerset. Considering Pembrokeshire is far smaller in population than Somerset, I guess this petition is going steadily upwards...

In the next blog, I will update on e-mails etc... sent to those in elected positions ..... and their responses ...... or not. Dont worry, I wont be passing ANY comments.

Time to think about a paper petition

Following the success of the on-line petition, I have had a request for a paper petition. Will have to give that some serious thought, but it seems like the next way to take this process forward.

However, it is re-assuring that at 1174 signatures, thats a further 28 in the last 24 hours. With the hot, humid weather, I guess thats good. Now 196th out of 7491 petitions. Another 10 signatures, and it overtakes a petition to grant a posthumous knighthood to Brian Clough.

I wonder how some of these petitions get put onto the web-site! But then I suppose there are others who question this petition.

I am grateful for the e-mail from Paul Hannam saying I am spending too much time on "politics" and not my work, and could he have a mention in my blog. As he is a manager for one of the companies I work for, I will by asking why he hasnt signed the petition, after all, he has viewed the bridge from the Jolly Sailor at Burton, when I bought him lunch!
I did say I would post a picture of him and he asked if I had a picture of Shrek. I am sure most people know what Shrek looks like. Bit like the scarecrow residents in Llangwm made, immediately comes to my mind....

2 days worth of statistics here as I didnt do last nights! 1146 signatures. Up 96 in 2 days. Now 199th in size, out of 7498. I have just overtaken the petition calling for the abolition of plastic shopping bags. Sorry...
Busy day.
1. Sent a fax to Nick Ainger MP as I have had no response since I left the message at his office, 8 days ago.
2. In between trying to work, I met up with my County Councillor, Ken Rowlands, who confirms he has spoken to County Council Leader, John Davies. I am hoping that maybe there can be some consensus on the matter, in taking the matter from PCC to the Welsh Assembly. Ken and I will discuss his (and PCC?) ideas, again.
3. I had an e-mail from an organisation called NAAT (National Association Against Tolls). I have advised that whilst they can mention the petition, I am not necessarily working with them (or indeed against them), at this stage. They can make my information available, via their site. I must therefore do some research into NAAT.
4. Had an approach from BBC Radio Wales to go to their studio in Haverfordwest, at Pembrokeshire College. After taking the dogs to the vet, I had to go straight to find these studio. I found my self in a tiny room with a telephone, headphones and a DIY list of instructions.
However, I had some bullet points with me and when I went on air, I managed to get more or less everything said, that I wanted to. To ensure it stayed in the mind's of listeners, I made reference to Welsh Assembly Government, First Minister, Rhodri Morgan's speech saying he wanted to build bridges with the other parties. I mentioned we didnt need him to build bridges - just take over the running of the one we have and re-unite Pembrokeshire and remove the tolls.
I had left the radio on in the car, as my wife was with me (and Randolf and Jessie). Ann said the dogs started to listen when they heard my voice coming from the car radio!!!!!
BBC Radio Wales may therefore appreciate that listening figures were at least 1 person and 2 dogs!

Apologies for not posting an update last night, but a long day at work meant I was too tired to log in and check progress.
Well, Thursday started with the press release going out to all the media, I could think off - press, radio and TV. Sorry, Real Radio, I have sent 2 e-mails asking for an e-mail address, but no one is answering me!
The Milford Mercury picked up the press release (page 3). www.milfordmercury.co.uk should get you to the article. I was Page 3. My lifetime ambition to get on page 3!
I am heartened in that the Cabinet member for Highways, Cllr James Adams was making out that the bridge cost more to run than it brought in, in tolls and said and didnt seem to concerned if the Welsh Assembly did take it over, subject to safeguard - which even I am in favour of!
Feel free to add any comments. We live in a democracy.
On Friday, I found I had a voicemail from the BBC at Carmarthen. They wanted me to keep them in touch, as too progress. I spoke to their guy, to keep him abreast and to apologise for not getting back yesterday. Work does take priority, I'm afraid - even if I do work for myself!

My County Councillor, Ken Rowlands, has come back to me and advised that he has spoken to the Council Leader. I will be meeting up with Ken on Friday, to discuss the matter further.

As a result, I have sent an e-mail of reassurance to the Pembrokeshire County Council Leader, Cllr John Davies.

The end of an exhilarating day as the petition finally goes over the 1000 signature mark.
As I go to bed now, 1012 signatures. Up 38 on last night.
The petition is now ranked 211th out of 7505 petitions.
On another issue, I see the Zimmers entered the charts at number 26, but that was the Top 40 charts. I hope I see a toll free Cleddau Bridge before I am 90 (not that I expect to live that long!).
I have got to get up early in the morning to finalise the press release to mark the passing of the 1000 mark.
Lets hope we can progress even further as the campaign has "Only Just Begun". I now start singing the Carpenters song .... Goodnight and thanks to everyone for their support?

Listeners to Radio Pembrokeshire on Thursday 31st May will have heard local MP,Nick Ainger, give his support to the call for the Welsh Assembly to take over control of the Cleddau Bridge. Nick Ainger is also a Welsh Office Minister and said he will be making representations to take up the matter.
I happened to be on my way to Carmarthen, when I heard the interview and must admit, being completely taken by surprise that the momentum seems to be buyilding up steam of its own.
I have not had ANY contact with Nick Ainger on the matter, though I did contact his office, an hour or so later, to try and make an appointment, to see him, at some time in the future, to discuss the matter.
As I believe that more is achieved by working together, an ethos I have applied throughout my life, I sent an e-mail to my MP and AM (Stephen Crabb and Paul Davies, respectively), asking for their support in moving this matter forward, together, for the benefit of ALL the people of Pembrokeshire. Not just one political party. I do not believe that this is an issue where party politics should be involved, as there seems to be so much support from the people of Pembrokeshire, to remove the tolls.
Its now 48 hours later, and I have not even had an acknowledgement, let alone support, from either Stephen or Paul. I will submit a posting here, when I receive response.
Its an irony that the campaign gets support from a local MP and Welsh Office Minister, when I haven't made an approach for it.
Watch this space, as they say.
Any way, its 23.47hours and I am off to bed to dream my next plans.

This is the first time I have ever done a blog and I hope that I can find my way back here, to continue the momentum.
I am the petition organiser of a petition set up on the Prime Minister's website (UK, if you are reading this from somewhere else on our planet. The aim is to do as much of the work as possible, on-line. Gone are the days, in my opinion, when you stand in a cold, wet town centre, stopping people to sign a petition, as they are doing their shopping.
This is the 21st Century - lets see if we can achieve success in the comfort of our homes.
